The Raisin route

The name of this route comes from the innumerable raisin groves which are found along it, along the southern-facing slopes. Here they use the grapes for the sundried raisins and the area's wine, produced by traditional methods, enjoys a reasonable reputation, particular its Muscatel.

You'll find the raisin route in the easternmost part of the Costa del sol, protected from the cold northerly winds by the mountain ranges of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama in a region called La Axarquia.

The one time inhabitants of the area of Islamic origin left behind an immense cultural heritage, as reflected in the marvellous buildings found here: all of the villages found here date from the 16th century, conserving parish churches with their respective minaret towers. Also the Muslims undertook agricultural activity, which has been carried on until today.

The route starts in Moclinejo, which many centuries ago was the battleground for the uprising against the Christian troops known as "the battle of la Axarquia".

Following the route marked by the raisin groves, we arrive in Almáchar, the ideal spot to enjoy the local dish, ajoblanco (cold garlic soup) together with coles moreados (Brussels) and a good local wine. Here you can visit the Raisin museum.

El Borge only 2,5 km. from Almáchar, was the centre point of resistance during the Morisco uprising . The village's rebel character is kept alive centuries later with the figure of Málaga's most famous bandolero, "el Bizco del Borge".

Very close to the 1020 metres of the Santopitar peak (in the el Borge municipal area), and under the gaze of La Maroma (2065 metres) is situated Cútar, which apart from being distinguished for its grapes and raisins, is also renowned for its oil. The Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, built in Mudejar style, holds a splendid chapel with polychromatic decoration from the Rococo era.

Comares is known as the Balcony of la Axarquia for the splendid view it possesses: this gave the town an important strategic role. Its one time castle still has two towers standing. This Moorish village has the amosphere of yesteryear. A nice way to experience this typical atmosphere is to enjoy the moorish walking route through the village.
